Our Story
Derek Wang grew up catching bugs in his backyard in Gainesville and turned that fascination into an entomology degree from the University of Florida. After 15 years working for large pest control companies, he saw a gap: customers were paying for treatments they didn’t understand, applied by technicians who couldn’t explain the science behind them.
In 2013, Derek and his wife Lisa founded ShieldGuard Pest Control in Tampa with a different philosophy: explain the science behind every treatment, use targeted applications instead of blanket spraying, and guarantee results — not just effort.
“We explain the science behind every treatment” isn’t a tagline. It’s how Derek trained every technician on the team. When a ShieldGuard technician is at your home, they’ll tell you what pest they’re targeting, why they chose that product, how it works, and what you can do to support the treatment. Knowledge transfers to the customer — that’s how trust is built.
