Engine Diagnostics
Check engine light on? We'll find the real problem — not just read a code.
Anyone with a $30 code reader can tell you what code your car is throwing. That's not diagnostics — that's just reading a number. Real diagnostics means understanding why that code was set, testing the components involved, and identifying the actual failure before any parts get replaced. At Ironclad Auto and Tire, our ASE-certified technicians use professional-grade scan tools, oscilloscopes, and hands-on testing to pinpoint the root cause of your problem. That means you pay for the right repair the first time — not a series of guesses at your expense.
Our Diagnostic Process
We start with a full OBD-II scan to pull all stored and pending codes, then review freeze frame data to understand the conditions when the fault occurred. From there, we perform targeted hands-on tests — checking sensors with a multimeter, running live data analysis, testing actuators, inspecting vacuum lines, and verifying fuel pressure. We don't stop at the code — we verify the failure before we recommend any repair.
Common Check Engine Causes
The most frequent triggers include oxygen sensor failures, catalytic converter efficiency codes, engine misfires from worn spark plugs or ignition coils, EVAP system leaks (often a loose gas cap), mass airflow sensor issues, and exhaust gas recirculation faults. Some of these are simple fixes, others require deeper investigation — the code alone doesn't tell the full story.
Why Codes Alone Aren't Enough
A single trouble code can have dozens of potential causes. For example, a P0420 code (catalyst efficiency below threshold) could mean a failing catalytic converter, a leaking exhaust manifold, a bad oxygen sensor, or even an engine misfire dumping unburned fuel into the exhaust. Replacing the converter without testing would be expensive and might not fix the problem. Proper diagnostics prevents that kind of wasted money.
Performance Issues We Diagnose
Check engine lights are just one reason to come in. We also diagnose rough idle, engine stalling, poor fuel economy, hesitation or stumbling during acceleration, hard starting, overheating, unusual engine noises, and loss of power. If your vehicle isn't running the way it should, we have the tools and experience to figure out why.
Transparent Pricing
Diagnostic fee is $89, which covers OBD-II scan, code interpretation, hands-on testing, and a detailed report of findings. If you approve the repair, the $89 diagnostic fee is applied to the cost of the repair.
